Auto Mart chats to Riaan Viljoen

We recently spoke to Rugby man, Riaan Viljoen, on his sports career, love for cars and life in general.

Viljoen (31) has played for the Sharks in the 2012 and 2013 Super Rugby Tournaments and toured with the Springboks to France, Italy, Ireland and England in 2009 and played two touring matches.

He is currently signed to play in the Top League in Japan for NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes.

  • At what age did you start playing rugby?
    I started playing rugby at 7.
  • When did you realise you had a talent towards playing the sport?
    Well, I had a dream at a young age to play cricket for the Proteas so when I got my first provincial colors at a young age I knew I stood a chance to live my dream.
  • Do you believe in hard work or pure talent?
    I believe in both. For me, it’s just been always to work hard and develop the talents God gave me.
  • What is the biggest challenge a young person faces to become a professional sports personality?
    Distractions that could lead you away from your main goal in life.
  • What has been your biggest achievement in your sports career?
    Biggest moment was going on tour with the Springboks. It was a dream come true.
  • Have you faced a lot of criticism in your sports career, and how do you handle criticism from the media?
    Yes, that’s all part of the line of work we are in. You just have to block out any negative media and keep believing in yourself and why you are here.
  • What is your favourite hobby? (besides playing rugby)?
    Lots, but my main hobby is just playing with my boys and spending time with my lovely wife.
  • Cars and sports personalities normally go together. Do you think this is true of rugby players?
    You always see guys collecting and driving nice cars, so yes, definitely cars and sport go together.
  • What would be the three top cars in your car collection?
    • Range rover
    • Porsche Camera
    • Land Cruiser
  • Cars or motorcycles? Which do you prefer?
    Cars, I’m too scared to get on a motorcycle.
  • Would you ever return to South Africa to play rugby here?
    Don’t know what the future will hold for me, but it would be nice to play in front of a packed South African stadium.
