Black Friday- Let’s fight against the growing crime in SA

We cannot continue to let crime in South Africa become a norm. As the crimes increase, we have to work together as communities, as a country, and even as individuals to stop this increment. We leave our homes in fear, fear of the violent crimes that could happen to us our families or friends.

How safe are our children? How safe are you?

Join us in the fight against the growing crime in South Africa.

A four year old boy was killed after being dragged outside a hijacked car in Reiger Park, Boksburg. This should shock us as a country. It shows the extent of crime is growing and we cannot stand by as a country and let such crimes continue.

Taegrin Morris was a four year old boy who had a future. He was too young, too pure and too innocent. What are we as a country doing to stop such crimes from happening again, to another child, to another woman or man?

In memory of Taegrin Morris, the Auto Mart team is supporting the 5FM campaign ‘Black Friday’ and the fight against crime in South Africa, by dressing in black to show their sadness and outrage over the numerous tragedies that have destroyed South African families.

Crime statistics show that carjackings had steadily decreased from 2008 to 2012 – from 14 915 to 9 475 cases. But in 2013 there was a high point in carjackings – up to 9,990 in the last year, demonstrating that the crime is once again increasing.

We need to work together as a country to fight against violent crimes in South Africa. There are many anti-crime programmes like the Crime Line, Fight against Crime website and Crime Stop that allow people to anonymously submit tip-off’s to local police, who will then act on the information. The anonymous calls can help eliminate citizens’ fear of intimidation by criminals.

If you know of carjacking groups, people involved in this crime or other crimes taking place in your area, contact the crime stop line (send anonymous SMS tip-offs to 32211) to help police and guard our communities from all these criminals and their crimes. The government commends communities in helping the South African Police Services to stop crime in South Africa.

There are also available organisations that assist people who have been traumatised or affected by a crime. Such as:

  • The Police Child Protection Units who investigate violent crimes against children and offer specialised services to child victims of crime.

          Website: www.lifeline.org.za

  • ShoutSA a 24 hour crisis intervention service for free, confidential telephone counselling, rape, trauma and Aids counselling.

         Website: www.shoutsa.com

  • FAMSA (Family and Marriage Association of South Africa) that supports families through stressful and offer people trauma and grief counselling, and many more.

          Website: www.famsa.org.za

There have been no arrests made in the Taegrin Morris death and carjacking, and if you have any information about this incident please send your anonymous tip to the police. We cannot let these people walk free. We can work together as a country to fight against such heinous crimes and stop them from happening to someone else.

Our condolences to the Morris family and we support you in this grievous time.

To the little angel Taegrin Morris, you were taken too soon… May Your Soul Rest in Peace!
