Peugeot confirms their new bakkie is coming for SA

Peugeot is re-energising its brand in South Africa with a new one-ton bakkie. While all the details of the local model have not been released, this bakkie has been developed in collaboration with the Chinese company, Changan. The latest Peugeot bakkie is likely to be based on the Changan F70, which is produced in Shenzhen China. While Peugeot has not announced the date yet, the latest model is predicted to reach South African shores at the end of 2020 or at the beginning of 2021. This model will also be manufactured in South America and it’s speculated that this will take place in Argentina.

Robust exterior

While the local specifications have not been revealed, the F70 is a high-quality bakkie that which achieves low noise levels inside the cabin for added comfort. It’s likely that the Peugeot variation will replicate most of the Changan bakkie’s styling. Distinctive changes to its exterior design include a refreshed front grille. The French brand’s iconic lion’s head will also feature at the front and back of this model. The F70 has a length of 5.3m and a width of 1.93m. Its height is 3.18m and it has a wheelbase of 3.18m.

Comfortable interior

The dashboard design of the F70 draws elements from Peugeot’s i-Cockpit design while incorporating inspiration from the 3008 and 5008. Other distinctive features of the interior include the flat-bottom steering wheel. Various controls can be adjusted using the piano keys, which are positioned underneath the air-conditioner. A highlight of this model is its digital infotainment screen.

Changan revealed that the F10 boasts a two-tone design, which is enhanced by silver and black trims. With cruise control, the driver can sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. The 8-way electric seat adjustment enables the driver to achieve maximum comfort according to the precise requirements. Another noteworthy feature that adds convenience to driving the F70 is the camera, which is positioned in the rear-view mirror.

Capable performance

The Changan F70 is fitted with a 1.9-litre turbodiesel engine, which has a maximum power output of 110 kW with a peak torque of 350 Nm. Another option is the 2.5-litre turbodiesel variation, which delivers 95 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. The 2.4-litre turbo-petrol derivative puts 134 kW of power at the driver’s fingertips with a peak torque of 270 Nm. The F70 is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission and an automatic transmission is also available. This bakkie has the option of 4×2 or 4×4 capabilities. The 4WD derivative features ESP and a self-locking mechanical diff-lock. Peugeot is expected to use their own engines in their latest bakkie, and it’s speculated that this will include a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine that delivers 110 kW of power with 370 Nm of torque.
